Saturday 30th December

At least I think it's Saturday? Awful morning on the hill, high winds and intermittent squally showers. To compensate the ponies were towards the western entrance just off the main path, cunningly using the contours and brambles/hawthorn as a wind block. Didn't look too pleased, but overall looked well and no obvious concerns.

Friday 29th Dec

The ponies were not far from where they were yesterday - Flam and Kat were grazing about 150m from the far gate, with Doune independently munching blackberry leaves about another 150m further west.  All close to the Morestead Rd, and there were some pieces of rubbish which had clearly been thrown from cars (Grrr!).  I removed what I could but not before Flam had decided to play with a discarded (paper fortunately) coffee cup.  Otherwise, all seemed well, and troughs were fine.  I passed the cattle on St Cath's - infuriating that they were so obvious today, but I see that Karen was pleased!

Occasional snatches of song thrush song - can spring be far behind?

Thursday, 28 December 2023

Thursday 28th Dec

Quite a blustery day.  The ponies were close to the Morestead Rd fence, about 100m from the far eastern end of the top track.  They looked well, and were briefly distracted by my arrival, but soon went back to grazing.  Troughs were full.

Wednesday, 27 December 2023

Wednesday 27th December

2 ponies were by the corral, no 3 was down from the water trough. All looking fine, trough full.

Tuesday, 26 December 2023

Tuesday 26th December

Found the ponies right up the far eastern end by the water tanks. They were looking really good and inquisitive to see me. Flam had her tail caught in a bush, but not enough to inconvenience her.

The roof of the beehive has been broken off, not sure if it's vandalism or ongoing works?

Monday, 25 December 2023

Monday 25 December

Merry Christmas everyone. The ponies were at the bottom gate waiting for me . It was drizzling but it did not seem to bother them one bit. All seemed well.

Sun 24 Dec

Found the ponies at the far end half way down the steep hill away from the trough.

Saturday, 23 December 2023

Saturday 23rd December

Quiet day on the hill, and luckily for me, I'd spotted a pony backside on the drive down Morestead Road, so no long pony hunt today. They were in the top eastern corner, slowly moving and eating their way up towards the gate. They were looking in fantastic condition with their winter coats coming through a treat.

Both troughs were full and watched as they partook in a tipple. Kat (or could've been Doune) had embraced the Christmas dressing up thing and had filled her mane with lots and lots of briars! She wouldn't let me get close enough to try and tackle the tangle though 😆.

Merry Christmas to you all, I hope you all have a wonderful and restful time. 🎄

Thursday 21st Dec

I did my check this afternoon, because of a morning commitment.  I set off along the top path, and met someone who knew Colin, and he told me that the ponies were a little further along and just down the hill.  Really?  Not a sign!  A good 45 minutes later, I found all 3 on the lower path about 300m down from the corral.  They were friendly and in good form.  Both troughs were full, and so all well.

Monday, 18 December 2023

Monday 18 December

The ponies were at the top of the hill and looking good. All seemed fine. Nick

Sunday 17th Dec

Found the ponies up by the beehive, with the lesser spotted Colin in attendance. I had begun to think Colin had migrated along with his butterflies.

The ponies all look great, hooves and coats in great condition.

Saturday, 16 December 2023

Saturday 16th December

Dreary day on the hill, but luckily the ponies were quite close to the east entrance. They were looking really good and Flam and Doune came over for a quick hello and lick. My hand must be really salty but clearly delicious 😋.

Wednesday, 13 December 2023

Wednesday 13th

The 3 ponies were visible from the trough by the corral, half way between the top and bottom paths. They all looked well. Kat, or it may have been Flam, got a bit inquisitive but backed off when I pointed my stick. That trough was full. We didn't check the top one.

We're around over the holidays to do our regular fortnightly checks.

Monday, 11 December 2023

Sunday 10th Dec

Ponies in fine fettle. Found them down the bottom side of the corral, just noticed one as I was walking in, otherwise I could have spent ages searching up the top side for them.

Monday 11 December

A dry day at last. The sun was out and the ponies were at the top of the site near the road. They were enjoying the sun on their backs. The troughs were full. No concerns.

Saturday, 9 December 2023

Fri 8th - all good

WE had a volunteer task at Deacon and had regular visits from inquisitive ponies! They very much liked eating the Hawthorn berries as we were cutting the trees, especially Flam. They are doing a grand job up there!

Thursday, 7 December 2023

Thursday 7th Dec

Ponies were about 100m from the main gate and corral, dining on a mix of grass and hawthorn berries.  Flam and Kat came to say hallo.  They all looked a bit bedraggled in the rain, but it didn't seem to bother them.  Trough was full - I didn't check the far trough in the circs.

Monday, 4 December 2023

Monday 4 December

The ponies were oblivious to the light rain. They were near the top of the hill between the path and the road. All looked well.

Sunday, 3 December 2023

Sun 3rd Dec

Grrrrrr. They said a LIGHT rain was forecast!!

Fortunately the ponies were fairly easy to find.

All 3 look in great condition, Flam came over to show me latest collection of burrs which she was happy for me to remove.

Saturday 2nd December

Bitterly cold on the Hill today, but also beautiful in a winter wonderland kind of way. Noticed the ice on the west trough had been broken, so guessed someone had been around.

No sign of the ponies though, so wandered up to east trough, ice was about an inch so broke it up and removed a few of the larger chunks. Also much colder and wintery on top of the hill. Trekked back along the path by the road and still no sign, then along the lower path, and still nothing. In fact it was easier to find the muntjac who hadn't smelt me in the still air. Then as I was wandering back along the middle path, saw Flam staring at me from halfway up the eastern slope. From a distance it was if she was smirking😀, just as I was starting to lose the will to live, cold, tired, feeling poorly.

Not far behind was Doune, slip sliding down the slope, with Kat even further up near the top of the hill. Looks like they're continuing to explore, which is great, but part of me misses the days they would hang around the corral.

They looked really well though, coats thickened up beautifully.

p.s. happy to cover any uncovered slots during the inclement weather?

Saturday 2nd Dec

Colin went up very early this morning to check the ponies and break the ice as there have been no posts since Wednesday. They were all fine :)

Wednesday, 29 November 2023

Wednesday 29th

Ponies were elusive this morning. We separated to search and Hiromi found 2 together and eventually the 3rd about 50 meters away looking rather dejected. They seemed well. Both troughs ok.

Monday, 27 November 2023

Monday 27 November

They seek them here, they seek them there. Ok I found them at the top entrance and they appeared to enjoy the breeze. I enjoyed the view. All seemed in good health. I popped over the road to see the cows who were all by the top gate chilling.

Sunday, 26 November 2023

Sunday 26 Nov

There really is something quite therapeutic about these ponies…..

Arrived on the site feeling rather miserable with the damp cold weather but after spending time with the ponies I left feeling much uplifted. I finally took pity on one of the ponies, the paler one who let me untangle her mane and forehead from a bundle of burrs. Once she was aware of what I was doing she was patiently content for me to spend about 20 mins freeing her up. So thank you Jayne for bringing them on site.

Friday, 24 November 2023

Friday 24th Nov

Another task on the hill today and was hoping they would pay us a visit. Thankfully they were all around the corral as we were leaving and looking in fine fettle indeed.

Thursday, 23 November 2023

Thursday 23rd Nov

3 red kites soaring high above Deacon Hill proved a lot easier to spot than 3 more substantial and earthbound ponies.  A walk along the top path proved fruitless, and so I went down and took the path which rises slowly back to the corral.  Again, no success.  I went down to the bottom, and headed eastwards, and nearly at the end, there they were, where I had been about 40 minutes earlier, much more interested in food than my arrival.  They looked fine, if a bit comical with burrs stuck between their ears.  Troughs both full.

There were birds around today, maybe thanks to the better weather - redwings (no doubt competing with the ponies for hawthorn berries), long-tailed tits, a pair of buzzards, and the S Water lake is indeed attracting a few things inc gadwall and shoveler.

Monday, 20 November 2023

Monday 20 November

Well I went up the hill and came down again. I am afraid they were hiding from me. But Jayne and Colin arrived so I left it to them to find them. Nick

Sunday 19th Nov

Ponies looking in great condition, apart from some stubborn burrs in their manes.

Saturday, 18 November 2023

Saturday 18th November

A bit muddy and slippery playing cat and mouse with the ponies this morning, although not sure who was playing which part. Tried the middle path, no sign of them, then back via bottom path and still no sign, and in the end halfway along the upper path they appeared out of the undergrowth. I suspect they'd been exploring the new opened up sections. They seemed to be on a mission and seemed almost frisky, so after a quick sniff (them of me obviously) and hello they were on their way, across the path and into the middle section, hunting down those delicious red berries. But they looked well, a little soggy, but fighting fit and pretty content. In fact in far better condition than me, exhausted after slipping and sliding in the mud and still recovery from yesterday's exertions.

Fiona - found an old half full drag sack in the undergrowth down at the bottom by the lower fence. Sorry I wasn't able to move it into the fenced section. It's a bit tucked away probably why it hasn't been discovered before.

Also there was a single wheel track on the lower path, not sure if it was a bike or a wheel barrow? No issue just mentioning it.

FRiday 17th

Ponies all looking fine and continuing to enjoy hawthorn berries. We had a task on the hill and they were grazing along the top track in the afternoon and hanging around by the corral when we left. Plenty of salt lick available and loads of water. WE removed the fences around our wildflower areas so I expect they will go in and investigate fully.

Wednesday, 15 November 2023

Wednesday 15th November

Ponies were right by the top gate. Startled by traffic but otherwise fine. Both troughs full, not overflowing.

We checked the cattle on the Dongas, all ok there, put on St. Caths. blog.

Monday, 13 November 2023

Monday 13 November

After the deluge overnight and the strong winds I expected to have to go on a hunt for the ponies but they were all on the path about 100m up the path. One was reclined but as I got closer it rolled on its back for a scratch and got back on its feet. All 3 looked well.

Sunday 12th Nov

Plenty of hoof tracks on the main path. I was expecting the ponies had made them galloping off to their hiding place knowing this was my day to come looking for them!! But I found them happily grazing where the cows used to be.

Saturday, 11 November 2023

Saturday 11th November

Not officially my day but as I was only across the road checking on the cows, thought it would be mean not to pop in and say hello. The ponies were close to main eastern entrance, a little spread out, but merged back together once I arrived. Despite the hideous weather, their coats (particularly Doune and Kat) are looking really lush and soft, just in time for the colder days and nights I guess. But they were looking brilliant, inquisitive and relaxed.

It's also great to see the lake filled up (more than last year), so thanks to Southern Water for that. Fingers crossed it attracts loads of migratory bird traffic, although at the moment it's being hogged by the famous migratory seagull. Although to be fair there were a couple of ducks on there too, so hopefully more will come.

On the way home I seemed to have accidently picked up a passenger in the form of a tiny spider, which was having a fine old time running about my bald pate and into my ear. Quite tricky maintaining concentration on the motorway with such shenanigans going on! 😁

Thursday, 9 November 2023

Thursday 9th Nov

All 3 were about 100m NE of the main gate (by the corral), in an area of rough grass.  Flam (I think) seems to like hawthorn berries, and was managing to  eat them without also getting pricked by thorns.  Maybe she is part giraffe.

The other ponies were grazing and although there was brief interest in my arrival, clearly that was more important.  Trough full.

Wednesday, 8 November 2023

Tues 7th

I visited end of day as the ponies hadn;t been seen for 2 days and we were concerned as obvioulsy it had also been bonfire night over the weekend. Anyway, the little beauties were right by the corral and looked in fine form. I was thankful as I was about to lose the light and didn't fancy a torchlight search!! Thanks so much for your ongoing checks, and please let me know directly or through the on call grazing nunber 01962 790544 if you can't find them and they also weren't found the day before! Many thanks all

Monday, 6 November 2023

Sunday 5th November

I had to concede in my hide and seek with the ponies today! Plenty of tracks particularly on the main path…but no sign. Unfortunately my bad tempered knee still shouts profanities at me if I try to make it go over uneven, slippy and steep ground so I didn’t venture too far from the main path all the way up to the beehive and back down around the corral and past the snake hotel!

Monday 6 November

A beautiful fresh day. But where are the ponies? I marched up the hill them marched down again. No sign of them except for plenty of fresh hoof prints. I went over to the Dongas to check the cattle and met  Dongas Monday looker Alain. He went on to check the gates etc, Nick

Saturday, 4 November 2023

Saturday 4th November

Anticipating a long hunt for the ponies, but no, they were stood right by the gate at the western entrance. They looked really forlorn and sorry for themselves and were pretty drenched through. But they seemed okay physically, think they might have been half asleep taking in the sun's warming rays.

Kat was the most inquisitive and Flam had a massive bout of uncontrollable yawning (at least I hope it was yawning?) They all had lots of briars in their manes, but Flam's was particularly densely covered. Unfortunately couldn't get any out without pulling her hair too much.

They all seemed to raise one hoof slightly, taking the weight off as if having a rest, no signs of injury so think it was just a resting thing.

Wednesday, 1 November 2023

Wednesday !st Nov

Quite a hunt for the ponies this morning, not by the corral so checked along the bottom and middle of the reserve. Walked up by the new fence. Checked the trough, (both are full) and there they were, a short distance down the top path. They looked fine but paid no attention to me. Then as I was listening for birds near the corral they came trotting down to investigate. Quite frisky but they don't charge a waving stick.

There were 3 or 4 partridges scuttling around.

Monday, 30 October 2023

Monday 30 October

The ponies appeared unfazed by the overnight poor weather . All around the corral. The lightest colour one stayed at the back under the cover of the tree. I checked the cows on the Dongas and they were at the far top corner munching away. 2 dog walkers approached informed about the cows and asked to put their dogs on leads. Nick

Sunday, 29 October 2023

Sunday 29th October

A very wet day. Fortunately the ponies were easy to find.

Happily grazing despite the weather and now mud free for the time being. No flies!

Saturday, 28 October 2023

Saturday 28th October

Dodging the showers, found the ponies just off the main path not far from the corral. They were mostly enjoying the Hawthorn berry feast, very much enjoying the feast! They seemed really happy, looked good and seemed happy to see me (or that could be wishful thinking 😊). Kat was still very muddy, so looked she'd had a really good time, and why not.

Thursday, 26 October 2023

Thurs 26th - lunchtime check. Road open again...

I popped in to plan some site management works and found the ponies along the bottom track. They were all looking great, but Kat looked like she had been rolling in lots of mud so she'd clearly been having a good time! Flam decided against eating my jacket luckily. They are loving eating young Creeping Thistles. Has anyone else noticed the copious amount of Hawthorn seeds in the pony poo? They clearly love the berries! Water supply all very full. A beautiful day on the hill, rabbit and muntjac spotted. Thanks all for your checks!

Thursday 26th October

A lovely sunny morning, though very wet underfoot.  The 3 ponies were all at the far (eastern) end of the track, apparently preferring the shorter grass on the track to the longer grass, and a few bits of shrubbery.  They looked a bit damp after the overnight rain, but seemed well and I didn't spot anything unusual.  They showed a passing interest in my arrival, but I clearly had no special goodies. Troughs were all full.

Wednesday, 25 October 2023

A quick thank you

I love reading the Blog and looking at all your great photos, and I wanted to quickly check-in and thank you all personally for volunteering your time to check the cattle and ponies.

As an aside, please keep a lookout for signs of food. Carrots were discovered on the ground a week ago which are not good for the ponies despite people's views that they are treats. Of even more importance at this time of the year is to be extra vigilant as people often dump pumpkins for the livestock thinking that they are also a tasty treat. They can prove to be lethal, especially in large quantities as they cause choke. Hopefully with the Morestead road closure we will not have a problem.

Thanks again, Jayne :)

Monday 23rd October - All cows off

Hi All,

We've taken off the three girls, they are happily grazing away over on Dongas St Caths.

Thank you so much for keeping an eye on them!

Sunday 22nd October

I know how the Grand ol Duke of York must have felt…marching up and down that hill!! But he wasn’t on a pony hunt. Eventually found them, and they are obviously moving well because by the time I got back from checking the cows….they were gone again! Ponies were in good shape, but rather muddy and still enjoying hawthorn berries. Cows were all lying down probably through having full tums rather than expecting more rain!

Saturday, 21 October 2023

Saturday 21st October

Planned my visit to the hill between the downpours, and the sun came out and the hill looked magnificent! It was a great day for wildlife spotting, probably helped with the Morestead Road shut.

The little muntjac was by the corral when I arrived, so watched him quietly from a distance for a bit. He was foraging under the trees. Managed to sneak past without disturbing him and headed up the path where I pretty quickly bumped into the elusive ponies. They were looking a bit soggy, especially Flam with her having a lighter coat. And she was happily munching away on Hawthorn berries, whilst Doune and Kat grazed nearby and were huddled together.

Strolled up to the eastern edge and in the next field there was a male pheasant and his harem of about 7 female (or juvenile) pheasants. The firing range was in full swing, so maybe the noise was keeping them further up the hill. And I had a look at the completed road and spotted another male pheasant strutting along the road without a care in the world. Hopefully he'll get over it quickly or things might not end up so well once the busy road reopens. The road works appear to be near the bottom now, so I assume it won't take too much longer, which is a good and bad thing.

The cows were up by the fence line, attracted to the sweet grasses on the other side of the fence apparently. But they looked great and really happy, and the flies seem have reduced slightly, although Dolly had lots on her flank which seemed to be irritating her a bit.

Friday, 20 October 2023

Friday 20th October

Look where they were when I arrived! At the gate scratching. They then moved to the bowser and scratched there! They all seem fine and no flies today hooray.

The water container was almost full so I didn’t fill anymore. All is well on the hill 😃

Thursday, 19 October 2023

Thursday 19th Oct

I met the cattle coming towards me as I walked east along the top path.  They were apparently looking for a different area to graze.  They showed a passing interest in my arrival but were in good form, and looking very well fed.  Water levels checked and were fine.

Not my week to check the ponies and I did not see them - they were not at the far east end by the bowser or visible from the top path.

Wednesday, 18 October 2023

Wednesday 18th Oct.

No sign of ponies having started the new lick by the corral. A bit of searching and found them happily browsing below the big clump of Beeches. all looked well. Troughs full, cows by fence, black one got to her feet without too much huffing and puffing. Looking fine.

Lots of birdsong. The Merlin bird app gave me: European Robin, Eurasian jackdaw, Carrion crow, Eurasian wren common firecrest and european greenfinch as closest matches. Saw a muntjack deer near the bridge and some pheasants.

Monday, 16 October 2023

Sunday 15th

Sorry for the late post. Got distracted by the rugby yesterday and a hospital appt this morning.

Cows enjoying the fresh munch on offer at the extreme west of their enlarged territory and both they and the ponies getting much less attention from flies as the temperatures drop.

Ponies also enjoying the beautiful day and looked in great nick.

Monday 16 October

A little chilly but the sun was out, nice day. The ponies were towards the top of the site near the path and the cows along the road fence line. The ponies were curious and started to follow me back down the path. A kite, kestrel and hen pheasant were also seen. Nick

Saturday, 14 October 2023

Saturday 14th October

Lovely autumn day on the hill, with the road works working close to the western gate. Probably why the ponies weren't at the corral as usual. Walked up to the eastern gate and then back along the top path before finding the cows right next to their barrier poles. They were laying down taking in the lovely sunshine and looking pretty relaxed. No signs of any discomfort or issues. Still a lot of flies, but maybe less than last week.

Then watched a crow having a dog fight with a buzzard, not sure who won, and tried to find where the ponies were hiding. Walked the whole site but after a good hour they didn't seem to be in their usual hiding places. I probably walked right past them without noticing, but as I had a different appointment couldn't keep looking, so will pop back in the morning to confirm they're okay.
